Racial Justice Act of North Carolina Plays Role in Death Penalty Cases
The Racial Justice Act of 2009 obligates a judge to change the sentence of execution to life in prison without parole if it is shown that race played a part in the conviction or sentence. The case of Marcus Reymond Robinson, an African American convicted of killing Eric Tornblbom presents the first time this law will be put to the test in the United States. Should this law take a decisive turn in this case, the eye of scrutiny would become more intense in all cases around the USA where the perpetrator is of color and the victim is not.
Federal Fruit Bacteria Testing Program Could End
The Department of Agriculture's Microbiological Data Program has been responsible for performing regular tests on fruits and vegetables for bacteria such as salmonella, E. coli and listeria might soon end if this portion of the 2012 proposed Obama budget passes Congress. The budget calls for the elimination of this program and to solely rely on private industry tests to be the only mechanism that could trigger national recalls if deadly pathogens are detected in the fruit and vegetable produce of grocery chains.
Muslim Terror in America Overblown
Muslim American Terrorism in the Decade since 9/11 study found that "none of America’s 14,000 murders in 2011 were due to Islamic extremism." The study was conducted by University of North Carolina professor Charles Kurzman. It also concludes that there is a systematic push to play up the Muslim American threat when the facts state differently. It mentions in detail the circumstances behind what has been classified as terrorism and the role played by the participants. The entire study can be found here.
The Grey Market Drug Trade
Drug shortages are rarely discussed yet yield immense profits. Many companies project what drugs will become scarce and when this should occur. Once this determination is made, other manufacturers of the same drugs can then add a markup to the in demand drug sometimes at a rate of over 6,000%.
Law Students file Bankruptcy
More students are filing bankruptcy now as they can't find jobs in the current American economy. This filing is due to help them pay off the debt they incurred through student loans. A growing number of them are students, and even the legal professional is no longer exempt.
University Study finds Blacks Sentenced More Harshly than Whites on a Federal Level
University study of 58,000 federal cases determined that African Americans sentences were 60% longer than Caucasians due to one factor: prosecutors choosing to apply a mandatory minimum sentence in each case.
African Americans Killed at Highest Rate in MO
Out of 114 homicides in 2011, 100 were African Americans the St. Louis Police Department has reported where most are killed by gun violence. This tragic rate has not become a part of the national discussion. Noone bothers to ask why but instead choose to reduce this statistic to simply: African American + male = Death. Yet many refuse to factor in the rates of unemployment, elimination of fully funded after school programs, decline in educational system, household instability, and countless more social problems many of which resulted from a historically concentrated effort of disenfranchisement upon those considered "less than."
Human Trafficking = Slavery in America for 2012
Human trafficking is now the 2nd fastest growing criminal industry (worth over $32 billion) according to the Justice Department. The majority of its victims are children who come from foreign countries, and a significant amount come from the African continent.
Woman Gets Gun Onto Plane at DFW
Judith Kenney carried a handgun through TSA security checkpoints and literally walked onto an airplane at Dallas Fort Worth International airport on Wednesday January 18, 2012. Even more astonishing is that screeners detected the gun in her purse but still allowed her to pick up the bag, leave the checkpoint and board the plane without being stopped. Security removed her from the plane as it was headed for the runway and charged her with a 3rd degree felony. What is notable here is that she has not been categorized as a threat, not been called a terrorist, or terrorism sympathizer, but rather the media is portraying this as a simple misunderstanding.
On December 31, 2011 a soldier carried C4 in his bag on a flight from North Carolina to Midland, Texas. TSA employees after finding a grenade allowed him to board the flight. Here again no mention of possible terrorism suspicions, or security risks requiring detailed investigations for possible criminal ties. The focus will remain on those designed to justify profiling and discriminating along every other reason (race, type of dress, etc) for some, instead of the actions of all.
Obama Admin. Admits Drone Strikes Creates Terrorism
Drone Strikes in Somalia have been acknowledged by the Obama administration as creating more threats to America. It has allowed only a handful of strikes, out of concern that a broader campaign could turn al-Shabab from a regional menace into an adversary determined to carry out attacks on U.S. Here is clear evidence that drone attacks which are widely used by President Obama are actually encouraging the terrorism it claims to fight.
America's Bloodiest Cities in 2011
Homicidal rates of three American cities are disproportionately highest primarily due to African Americans killing other African Americans. Here the rates are alarming as they are unacceptable.
Debt for Americans At Highest Level
Working Americans are forced to increase their debt primarily due to the current recession. This has culminated in mass layoffs requiring many to get additional schooling to make themselves employable often in fields they have no prior experience. Since they are laid off, they are forced to incur loans for this purpose. As a result, the debt marker for these individuals has risen to astronomical heights.
NY Masjid Firebombed in Terror Attacks
Four bombings centering on Muslims in Queens took place on January 1, 2012. It is noteworthy that none of the reports openly call this an act of terrorism. The fact this occurred at the start of the new year can only be meant to send the message that Muslims will continue to be targeted for random acts of cowardly violence. The perpetrator confessed to using Molotov cocktails to additionally fire bomb a Hindu temple, and grocery store.
US Beats Drums of War with Iran
The USS John Stennis was relocated from the Persian Gulf into the North Arabian Sea during a time when Iran's Navy was conducting exercises in the Strait of Hormuz, Sea of Oman and parts of the Indian Ocean. This comes on the heels of Iran threatening to block the Strait of Hormuz if the US imposes sanctions on its exports.
ANC Celebrates 100 Years of Freedom Fighting
January 8, 1912 saw the birth of the African National Congress in Bloemfontein, South Africa. The organization that produced Steven Biko, Nelson Mandela and ended white supremacist rule still continues to fight to maintain its humanity. Now their descendants will mark their historic events by acknowledging their 100 year legend.
Muslims Boycott Mayor Bloomberg
NY Muslims Boycott Mayor Bloomberg's New Years Breakfast out of resentment for what they call law enforcement targeting of the Muslim community. The police department has been using the CIA to monitor masjids, community centers and schools.
Defense Sec. Admits Iran is Not Building Nukes
Secretary Panetta said on 'Face the Nation' that Iran is not building a nuclear bomb but refuses to rule out a pre-emptive US strike. It should be noted here that Iran is a signatory to the UN Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) which recognizes the authority for its members to have the "benefits of peaceful applications of nuclear technology, including any technological by-products which may be derived by nuclear weapon States from the development of nuclear explosive devices, should be available for peaceful purposes to all Parties of the Treaty, whether nuclear-weaon or non-nuclear weapon States."It must also be noted that while Israel is highly suspected by the US government of a desire to bomb Iran it has refused to be a signatory of the NPT.
